Fruits Basket

Summary:
The story follows the life of Tohru Honda, who is recently orphaned when her mother died in a car accident. She is taken by her grandfather but because the house needs remodelling, she is forced to leave temporarily. As she has no place to go, she resorts to set up a tent in the woods and find a job to support herself. Despite the hardships, she still maintains her optimistic spirit.

One day, Tohru stumbles upon a house in the woods. It happens to be the home of Shigure Sohma and her popular classmate, Yuki Sohma. After the Sohmas learn that Tohru lives in a tent, they feel sorry for her and offer her a spare room in exchange for her household service. Soon after she moves in, she meets another Sohma member, Kyo. She then discovers the family secret - 13 members of the Sohma family are possessed by the animal spirits of the 12 chinese zodiacs plus cat. They transform into animals whenever they are hugged by the opposite gender. The Sohmas let her continue staying in the house when she promises not to tell anyone.
Slowly, she meets the other family members one by one and become close to some of them. The Sohmas start to accept her as part of the family as well.
